ok so the speakers built into my laptop like broke but how do i switch the settings on my computer to play sound from portable speakers that i will plug into the computer?

Just plug it in the headphone socket.if they don’t work you got a bigger problem and the speakers are not broken. You should not have to change any settings.
you need active speakers (plug into a wall socket)
then you plug in the 1/8th inch din plug into the headphone jack on the notebook and turn up the volume
just plug in headphones and that might work
